Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about using DiskPricing.com
How do I use this data for analysis?
If you would like to do more complex analysis, try entering the following into Google Sheets:
=IMPORTHTML("https://diskpricing.com", "table")
This will import our price comparison table directly into your spreadsheet for further analysis.
Do you need a graphic designer?
No. This site is designed to maximize information density, accessibility, and performance. More whitespace, colors, and icons won't help users find the best storage deals faster.
Why are the prices different for similar drives?
Pricing reflects a large number of factors including warranty duration, intended market, manufacturing processes, expected performance, and inventory levels.
If you're building a RAID array where you can tolerate some failure and don't need fast seeks, cheap unreliable drives might be acceptable. For critical data, invest in enterprise-grade drives.
Backblaze's blog has excellent posts that enumerate these factors.
For information about specific drive models and technologies,AnandTech has very in-depth reviews.
Do the prices include shipping and taxes?
The prices listed here don't include shipping and taxes, as we don't know where you live. The majority of these listings include free shipping, especially if you have Amazon Prime, but make sure to check shipping costs before placing an order.
How often are prices updated?
Prices are updated every 6 hours using Amazon's Product Advertising API. The last update time is shown at the top of the page. You can also manually refresh the data using the refresh button.
Why aren't all Amazon storage products listed?
We are limited by the functionality of the Product Advertising API and cannot retrieve more than 100 items per query and can only perform a limited number of queries per day. This leads to the exclusion of many products with a low sales ranking.
If there is a product that you believe should be listed, please email its ASIN to [email protected]
What countries/regions do you support?
Currently we support Amazon Australia. Amazon's affiliate program and API access is managed by a different team in each country and some of these teams do not believe that processing, filtering, sorting, editing, and removal of counterfeit products is valuable to the customer.
The following marketplaces have threatened or suspended our accounts and are unlikely to return without clear policy changes from Amazon: amazon.jp, amazon.nl, amazon.it, amazon.sg.
How do you make money from this site?
We receive commissions for products purchased through the links on this site through Amazon's Affiliate Program. This doesn't affect the price you pay for products.
The intent of this site is to be a simple reference rather than a comprehensive search index.
What about SSDs vs HDDs? Which should I choose?
HDDs (Hard Disk Drives):
- Best for bulk storage and backup
- Lower cost per TB
- Available in very large capacities (up to 20TB+)
- Slower access times and data transfer rates
- More susceptible to physical shock
SSDs (Solid State Drives):
- Much faster boot times and application loading
- Silent operation and lower power consumption
- More durable (no moving parts)
- Higher cost per TB
- Generally available in smaller capacities
NVMe SSDs:
- Fastest storage option available
- Ideal for gaming, video editing, and professional work
- Uses PCIe interface for maximum speed
- Highest cost per TB
How can I track price changes?
While we don't currently offer built-in price alerts, you can:
- Bookmark specific product pages and check regularly
- Use the CSV export feature to track prices in your own spreadsheet
- Set up browser bookmarks to check our homepage daily
Price alert functionality is on our roadmap for future development.
What does the warranty information mean?
Drive warranties vary significantly and are an important factor in pricing:
- Consumer drives: Typically 2-3 years warranty
- Pro/Gaming drives: Usually 5 years warranty
- Enterprise drives: 5 years with higher workload ratings
- NAS drives: 3-5 years with 24/7 operation rating
Always check the specific warranty terms before purchase, as they can significantly affect the value proposition.
